6 Tricks to Bring Nature Indoors With Biophilic Design

With our urban lifestyle we spend most of our time indoors, therefore we don’t have the luxury to connect with nature.

Biophilic design is a way of incorporating nature into our homes and work spaces, emphasizing on the relationship between humankind and nature, and bringing the nature in.

Studies have shown that adapting the biophilia trend in our workspaces and homes can increase our wellbeing, creativity and concentration and have a positive impact on our mood.

Here are 6 ways to create a connection with nature in your personal and working space:

1. Indoor plants forever

Adding plants wherever possible is the easiest way to surround yourself with nature. Big, leafy greens work best as accent pieces, and smaller plants are wonderful coffee table decorations. Not only do they add colour, but they are a great source of oxygen and purify the air by absorbing particulates such as dust, dirt or smoke and carbon dioxide.

2. Natural materials

Fresh, natural materials such as wood, stone, copper, concrete, and granite bring an organic and serene ambiance to any space, especially when designing with wood and stone, they are a great way to mimic the outdoors.

3. Windows

Another way to add more life in a space is to incorporate more sunlight in your space. Go for lighter drapes – in color or material – instead of darker and heavier ones. For spaces that need more light, use sheer white drapes or white blinds to give it a modern finish.

4. Warm Colours

If you are designing your space, don’t shy away from colour, especially natural shades. Dull colours have have a negative impact on mood and performance, so try using more vibrant and warmer hues, even if it’s just for an accent wall or decor items.

5. Nature on the Walls

Remember the “kitsch” floral or natural landscape wallpapers in your grandmother’s living room? They’re back in trend with a bang! They will create a new dimension in your space, and act as a natural room divider.

6. Decorate with branches

If you tend to forget to water your houseplants, but still want to incorporate a few natural elements, consider decorating with large branches. This option is great in the fall and winter season.
