A Chat with Sebastian Herkner, Designer of the Year at M&O

January is Paris’ time to shine; and what better way to open 2019’s design calendar than visiting Maison & Objet, one of the world’s biggest interior design fairs held twice a year in the French capital.

Since 1995, Maison & Objet Paris has been the ultimate platform for professionals to discover new brands and new collections from some of the world’s most renowned designers. It’s often where you can catch a first glimpse of the newest and trendiest looks that are about to be spread everywhere the coming year.

Moodfit team was at the illustrious exhibit for five days, and its highlight was our quick chat with “Designer of the Year”, Sebastian Herkner. We talked about what design means to him, his source of inspiration and being part of M&O’s wall of fame. Here’s what he had to say:

What got you into design?

I’ve always had a strong interest in creativity and production methods, from both the crafts and the technological aspects. Design is my personal way to express myself.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I am a curious person in general. I love to travel and observe different cultures and people. This provides me with a huge source of inspiration.

What’s next for you?

We are currently working on exciting projects in different disciplines. I like variety and new challenges.

How did you get the title “Designer of the year” at M&O?

I was nominated because of my work over the last 10 years. I am very happy that M&O appreciates my design language and philosophy to design in a sustainable and responsible way. Design is a intercultural conversation, and it is important for me to focus on human beings, not just as clients also to work with them in workshops together. Craftsmen are my heroes: they can transform my scribbles and ideas to something special and unique.
