Moodfit Online Interior Designer, Charbel Tawil, is a firm believer in minimalism when it comes to designing interiors, and has a passion for creating luxurious designs from practical and essential pieces. With more than 10 years of experience in the architecture and design fields, Charbel still seeks knowledge in these fields and conducts extensive research when starting a new project. Moodfit team had the chance to sit with Charbel for this exclusive interview.

What did you study and where?

I received my Master’s degree in Interior Architecture from the Lebanese University in 2008. Also attended the MOOC Product Design course at TU Delft University Netherlands with distinction.

What pushed you to become a designer?

Simply, my love and enthusiasm for design.

How many years of work experience do you have?

Before setting up my own practice in 2016, I collaborated on numerous interior design projects with Polypod, SEK Architects, and Wood and Wood for a period of 10 years.

Where do you get your inspiration from? Who do you consider as international or regional role model and inspirational creative designers?

Inspiration can literally come from anywhere. I usually ask myself this question when I am happy with a new design I have completed. The answer is really hard, and usually it is nature and the development of the way we see things. If I had to choose a designer, although I find each designer in distinct in their own way, I would say the works of the French designer Philippe Starck is a great inspiration to me due to its challenging simplicity and creativity.

What is the best design advice you have ever received?

The Italian architect Benedetta Tagliabue advised me to have as much patience as possible while designing and while working on seeing the design come true.

What is the first thing you do when you get a new project?

Starting with research is the key, as if I know nothing about architecture!

Sustainability and eco-friendly living are becoming more essential in life. How do you take that into consideration when designing?

Designing a space is at the end of the day the creation of a physical/sensual volume from materials and energy, thus these materials should be sustainable and eco-friendly. Moreover, the process also consumes parts of our mother nature, the challenge is to build without harming nature.

What is your favorite room to design?

Challenging ideas that the client may propose or the space requirements make any room an interesting room to design.

What’s your preferred design style?

Minimalist, where the final design is reduced to its necessary elements while distinguished by superior materials that give luxury to the functional and aesthetic space. The concept of minimalism is based on the phrase “Less is more”.

What is the weirdest design request a client has ever asked you?

When designing an apartment, no request is weird, I try to get as much information from the client in order to reach a design that fits his personality and lifestyle.

What is your own house/apartment/office like?

I designed my apartment and studio using minimalist ideas so that it has the flexibility to evolve through time due to the changes of the functions. The materials and the elements are mainly a collection of recycled items from different sources
